The Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on declaring 2021 the Year of Nizami Ganjavi in the Republic of Azerbaijan

Nizami Ganjavi, a prominent representative of world literature, a great Azerbaijani poet and thinker, is one of the few personalities who have opened a new page in the artistic thought annals of humanity. The brilliant heritage of the eminent poet, which has become an integral part of our people’s morals, has preserved its unique place in the treasury of the exceptional cultural wealth of the East for centuries.

All his life Nizami Ganjavi lived and worked in Ganja, one of the most important cultural centers of that time, and created beautiful pearls of oral culture that enriched the history of the philosophy-social and artistic-aesthetic thought of the Middle East. The widely known “Khamsa” by Nizami Ganjavi stands at the top of the world’s poetic and philosophical thought. The poet-thinker laid the foundation for a large literary school involving many followers. Nizami’s works decorating the most famous libraries and museums gave impetus to developing the art of Oriental miniature.

The genius of Nizami has always been in the spotlight of world oriental studies. In our country, a lot of work has been done in the study and promotion of Nizami’s work, a scientific-critical text of his works has been prepared, which is highly valued in the study of Nizami’s art, and his books have been published in elegant design and mass circulation. A memorable image of Nizami was established in literature and art. The poet’s mausoleum was erected in his hometown of Ganja, and statues were set up in Baku, St. Petersburg, and Rome. The Institute of Literature of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the National Museum of Azerbaijan Literature are named after Nizami Ganjavi. The Nizami Ganjavi Center at Oxford University in the UK is operating successfully.

The anniversaries of Nizami Ganjavi have always been solemnly celebrated in our country. The 800th anniversary of the great poet was a turning point in the study and promotion of his legacy. National leader Heydar Aliyev, who has always approached the classical literary and cultural heritage of Azerbaijan from the standpoint of national pride and patriotism, also paid particular attention to the legacy of Nizami. The decision “On measures to further improve the study, publication, and promotion of the heritage of great Azerbaijani poet and thinker Nizami Ganjavi”, adopted in 1979 on the initiative of Heydar Aliyev, opened up new prospects for the study and promotion of Nizami’s work. The celebration of the 840th anniversary of the immortal poet, held in 1981 with the direct initiative and participation of the great leader, became a significant event in the cultural life of the country. In 2011, the 870th anniversary of Nizami Ganjavi was widely celebrated at the state level with a series of events.

In 2021, the 880th anniversary of the great poet and thinker Nizami Ganjavi will be celebrated. Guided by paragraph 32 of Article 109 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and taking into account the exceptional significance of the rich creativity of a powerful master of words and ideas as an achievement of human culture, which continually calls people to moral improvement and instills high spiritual qualities, I conclude:

  1. To declare 2021 the Year of Nizami Ganjavi in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
  2. The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan to develop and implement a plan of activities related to the Year of Nizami Ganjavi.
